With the December holidays approaching, many South African families are preparing to join thousands on one of the most iconic road trips in the country, the drive from Gauteng to KwaZulu-Natal.
Though it may be tempting to put your foot on the gas and reach your destination as quickly as possible, there’s a unique charm in slowing down, enjoying the journey and creating memories along the way.
According to Orrin Cottle, CEO of Brahman Hills in the Midlands, KwaZulu-Natal has it all.

Drawing on his expertise in creating unforgettable experiences, Cottle shares some tips to transform your road trip from Gauteng to KZN into a fun-filled family adventure.
Plan stops worth the pause
Taking a break every two hours is recommended to stretch and recharge, however, rather than only stopping at service stations, Cottle suggested including interesting attractions along your route.
“It’s worth a short detour to places such as the central Drakensberg for an exhilarating Canopy Tour or the magnificent, internationally acclaimed gardens at Brahman Hills in the KZN Midlands,” he suggested.
The expert said that the addition of six new sculptures offers a unique blend of art and nature worth viewing, and the kids can meet the famed “Giant”.
“Then of course there is the historic Mandela Capture Site or the PheZulu Safari Park and Cultural Village situated in the Valley of a Thousand Hills near Hillcrest.

The expert said that when it’s time for a pit stop, look for places that offer more than just fuel and fast food.

Capture the moments
Cottle also recommended that you take a camera or make use of your phone to document your trip.

He added that kids and adults alike can enjoy looking back on these photos once you arrive while it’s a simple way to add a bit of fun and make the drive feel like a holiday activity.

Lastly, he said that don’t feel pressured to keep the kids entertained non-stop and allow them to read, nap, or even get a little bored as it’ll make the stops feel all the more exciting.
