THYNA Subramoney, a 73-year-old grandmother from uMdloti, has achieved her second hole-in-one at Mount Edgecombe golf course. Despite challenging weather conditions, her unexpected achievement comes after 24 years of dedication to the sport she once laughed at.
Subramoney, of uMdloti, was playing at the ladies club Wednesday tournament, at the Mount Edgecombe golf course, when she unexpectedly scored big.
She did not expect the achievement because the ground was wet after the rains.
“I scored a hole-in-one on the 17th hole during a weekly women's tournament. I could not believe it because I had used one wood golf club instead of three wood.”
Before her unexpected shot, she told her playing partner, Angie Valjee, that she would take a chance and ‘just hit the ball’.
“When I hit the ball, it went off very well and I thought I had hit the ball over the green. When we reached the green, we searched all over for the ball but we couldn’t find it. Then, when one of the teammates was preparing to putt, she shouted out: ‘hey there is a ball in the hole’.
“After we inspected the ball, we found it was my ball that ended up as a hole-in-one. My teammates just jumped for joy and this was duplicated by other golfers around us.”
This is the second hole-in-one that Subramoney has achieved in 6 years at the same golf course.
She started playing golf in the 1990s after her three children married.
“I was lonely so I would follow my husband, Subry, to the golf course and walk behind him. One day while he was playing a tournament at Drakensberg Gardens, I told him that I did not want to follow him around but wanted to play the game.”
Her husband has been playing golf for 40 years and she always laughed at the game before she started playing.
“I used to say, you are chasing a white ball around the course but when I started getting lonely, it started to be a fun game for me.”
Over the years Subramoney has won Wildcoast Challenge twice, the Mercury Million thrice and the POST tournament twice.
“I have lived an interesting golfing life because the game filled a void but I also turned out to be good at the sport. Who knows, maybe I will hit a hole-in-one a third time,” said a delighted Subramoney.
She celebrated her achievement by buying a round of drinks for her fellow golfers.
