Una Lee, 84, from Westgate, celebrated her birthday with a visit to the Youth Media Movement(YMM) training centre, at Mitchell’s Plain High School, in Portland, last week.
Ms Lee, pictured here with her niece, Cheryl Lamour and YMM technical assistant, Yusra Mamwel, from Tafelsig, is no stranger to training centres and had spent much of her working life teaching trainee machinists how to operate the machines at a clothing factory in Salt River. But unlike her time at the factory, the machines at the YMM are nothing like she’s ever encountered before on any production line.
These are capable of churning out products using state of the art technology. However, always willing to learn something new, Ms Lee was taken on a tour of the facility and introduced to the equipment used by the YMM students.
But this was not just a sight-seeing tour as she was given the task working on a computer, producing her own printed cup and even tried her hand at flying one of the drones used by students at the centre to prove that one is never too old to learn something new.
