Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro praised his troops for a good performance, as they edged Chippa United 1-0 in their Betway Premiership clash at Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, in Gqeberha, on Wednesday evening.
As Riveiro was serving a touchline ban in their previous match over the weekend, Pirates lost 2-0 to Marumo Gallants as their title challenge suffered a heavy blow.
In midweek though, and with Riveiro back in his familiar position in the dugout, Pirates were the dominant team.
Pirates had eight shots on target to just the two of Chippa, and the visitors bagged the only goal of the game through Nkosinathi Sibisi just before the break.
As we expected, very equal first half in my opinion. Maybe, with one-and-a-half clear chances for us,” Riveiro told SuperSport TV after the match.
“It was nice to score just before halftime in a set play. I think it gave us more confidence, and I think we played a good second-half in terms of controlling every scenario.”
Riveiro went on to say that his side were ‘solid in attack’ and that Chippa were unable to create many opportunities of their own.
“I remember one or two crosses, but not really with direction that went through or past [keeper] Melusi [Buthelezi].”
“But nothing much in terms of chances for the opponents, so I think [it was a] solid performance, not beautiful, but solid enough to get the three points away from home.”
With the win, Pirates move up to 39 points after 17 games in second spot on the log, while Mamelodi Sundowns lead the way with 55 points after 21 matches.
Pirates will next be in action on Saturday in the Nedbank Cup quarter-final against SuperSport United in Polokwane.
