Scenes of jubilation last seen when SK Walmer won promotion back to the Western Province Super League A last season broke out sporadically on the sidelines of the Kuils River sports ground in Jagtershof on Saturday.
The Bo-Kaap side celebrated their first win of the season after they narrowly lost (17-19) to NTK in their opening fixture back in the big league, a week ago.
As the saying goes “a win, especially an away win, is a win” and that is exactly what the SK Walmer team achieved in the evenly contested fixture to emerge 23-14 winners.
Flyhalf Ayyoob Davids was the star performer for men from the Bo-Kaap with his contribution of 18 points. Davids dotted down a try and converted it. He also converted teammate Labeeb Kannemeyer’s second half try and slotted over three penalties.
Ashieq Wise, coach could not hide his delight when the final whistle blew. “This is a great win for us going forward,” Wise said under a heap of well-wishers and high fives.
“We will have to work hard. Super League A is a very competitive competition. Next week we face Villagers at the track. Playing at home is an advantage but certainly not a given that we will win. But I take the win against Kuils River,” said Wise.
