Like father, like son as Michael Vaughan’s heir apparent makes a name for himself in South Africa

There’s a new kid on the block in England cricket, and he is following closely in his father’s footsteps as he makes a name for himself in South Africa.

Former England captain Michael Vaughan has watched his son Archie rise through the ranks, as the youngster is the skipper of the England Under-19 side.

England are currently taking on hosts South Africa in an Under-19s series in Cape Town.

The older Vaughan made his Test debut against South Africa back in November 1999 at the Wanderers. That day is etched deeply into the history of South African cricket, as the tourists were reduced to 2/4 on a frenetic opening morning of the first Test in Johannesburg.

Fearsome attack

That day saw a rampant Proteas attack, led by Allan Donald and Shaun Pollock at the peak of their powers, rip through the England batting lineup who were ultimately dismissed for 122.

One batsman for England stood resolute on that frenetic first morning as it was Vaughan who made 33, and later ably supported by a young Andrew Flintoff with 38 as the tourists avoided total embarrassment.

Vaughan would go on to play 82 Tests and 86 One-Day Internationals for England in a fine career.

Now aged 50, Vaughan can hold out genuine hope of his 19-year-old son enjoying a career for England.

Archie who was born in 2005, was too young to remember watching his father at his peak before he hung up his spikes in 2008.

"I didn’t get to watch him play live, but I’ve seen highlights. In my career so far, he’s taken a backseat role, ensuring there’s no pressure on me. His advice has always been to have fun and enjoy the game, irrespective of my position in the team,” Vaughan told SportsBoom.com

"He leaves the technical aspects to the coaches and serves as a supportive figure. It’s been a great balance for me.”

Making a name for himself in South Africa was special, Archie explained.

"Representing your country is special, but to do so in a place as beautiful as South Africa, with Table Mountain as a backdrop, makes it even more memorable. Sometimes, you just take a moment to admire the view."
