This Sunday, September 7, Mandela Park in Khayelitsha will beat to the rhythm of running shoes as the Khayelitsha Athletics Club hosts its annual race. This race is more than just a competition; it's an example of the positive spirit that defines the township.
With extensive measures implemented alongside their various stakeholders, the club says they have truly pulled out all the stops to welcome runners from all corners of the Cape metropole.
"We have not encountered any incidents in the past, no vehicle break-ins, and no crimes committed during the hosting of our race. Therefore, we are eager to once again cultivate a joyous morning of running that yields only positive outcomes," said race director Sphiwo Klaas.

"This is an opportunity for runners to immerse themselves in a truly authentic 'kasi' experience," said Klaas, encouraging runners to soak in the sights and sounds, to feel the warmth of the community's support.
He said the race is part of the Coca-Cola League series, a platform where clubs accumulate points based on their members' performances. "It's more than a singular race; it's a marathon of club excellence that builds throughout the year. The points system not only fosters healthy competition but also strengthens the camaraderie and team spirit within and between clubs," said Klaas..
Cape Town's MMC for Safety, JP Smith, also spoke of the extraordinary precautions being put in place. He said The streets of Khayelitsha will be under the watchful eye of a significant deployment of law enforcement agencies, ensuring a safe passage for all participants.
