More than a thousand runners caught the sunrise warming up at Langa Stadium on Saturday April 27, Freedom Day, for the third TymeBank Langa Run4Freedom race.
The run consisted of a10km and a 6km race. This year's event also coincided with the country’s celebration of 30 years into democracy.
Aubrey Issacs, rganiser of the event and also Langa Running Club Chairman Aubrey Issacs said the attendance of the event exceeded their expectations and they were really inspired. “We had well over 1500 runners finishing the 10-kilometre run, with many hundreds more participating in the 6-kilometre run.”
Mayor of Cape Town Geordin Hill-Lewis was one of the people who participated in the 6km run.
The Number one in the 10km run Edward Jack who also resides in Langa crossed the line in 29 minutes. He said running across Langa gave him motivation.
“Doing this race while residing in Langa is a motivation for me and the younger ones who are waiting for me to come through, it's an inspiration to the youth to see where i come from and where i am at now”. Said Mr Jack.
Edward said his wish now is to run in sub 29 with the big boys so he can qualify for the Olympics. He concluded by saying that the gap he opened as he headed from the finishing line with no other runners in sight, came through self discipline and training hard.
