In what is described as a historic first, a Mitchell’s Plain school darts team have been selected to take part in Darts South Africa’s national championships, in KwaZulu-Natal, in July. The youngsters have all come through the 180 Plus schools’ darts programme established by Westridge resident Alister Porthen three years ago.
In preparation for nationals, the girls are coached by Yolanda van Rooyen, from Lentegeur and a Protea player selected for the World Cup of Darts in Denmark later this year. The boys are being coached by Waleed Clayton and Earle Pentolfe, both with international and national experience. The group still needs to raise funds to help cover their costs. Call 066 126 3300 for more information about the programme or if you’d like to assist.
