Children from Searidge Park, Tafelsig, Eastridge, Beacon Valley, and Lentegeur surprised the founder of the Mark Jeneker Foundation by performing gospel hymns at his home on Sunday, July 27.

The children, who arrived as a band with their own instruments, had taken part in a series of art workshops hosted by the Mark Jeneker Foundation during the June holidays.

The workshops, held across Mitchell’s Plain, aim to keep children safe and creatively engaged during the school holidays.

As a token of appreciation, a group of participants arrived at the organiser’s home to perform gospel hymns using their own musical instruments, said Mr Jeneker.

“It was completely unexpected and really overwhelming.”

While the initiative has grown, many other children in the community are eager to join but are unable to afford instruments.

An appeal has been made to individuals or companies who may be able to donate musical instruments, allowing more young people to be involved.

“With more support, we can accommodate more children, give them a safe space, and teach them the joy and discipline of music,” Mr Jeneker said.
