Mitchell's Plain Fitness Club celebrated its first anniversary with the aim of reawakening their members' consciousness.

The event took place at Westridge Civic Centre hall on Thursday, July 3.

On the rainy day, the club and the invited guests highlighted the need to maintain a stable supply of healthy, safe blood and blood products, while encouraging people to become regular exercisers. But it was also an opportunity to thank the members whose passion for exercises enhances the lives of other people who admire their lifestyle.

Founder of the club Andre Sauls said he appreciated the members and leadership who have ensured that the first anniversary celebration was a success. He said the club was more than just a fitness group, but a movement dedicated to empowering the community through health, wellness and inclusivity.

He said the club's mission was to bring together diverse people and empower them mentally and physically through health and fitness exercises.“I believe that everybody, regardless of age, background or income, deserves access to an opportunity to better themselves physically and mentally. We do not know how long we have, that is why our health and wellness is important,” he said.

Mr Sauls said the club does not have all the tools needed to support its mission, but he trusts that by the grace of God, someone’s heart might intervene. He said the focus is not on revenue but on making an impact. “We strive to break down barriers, financial, physical, psychological and keep our people from prioritising their wellbeing,” said Mr Sauls.

His words were echoed by another club member, Joe Kannemeyer, who said the club, which has 80 members, helps keep seniors fit. He said those with chronic conditions are being supported through exercise. “We also have a social side of things where we look at feeding the hungry and promoting cancer awareness in the community. We have a cancer run once a year. We really look after our community,” he said.

Guest speakers encouraged the seniors to continue with exercising and eating healthy. Chiquita Foster of Smart Wellness Solutions Biokinetics said the club has the power to change people’s lifestyle. She encouraged them to also eat healthy by planting. She called them wellness champions. She said eating healthy and exercising could help beat diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, arthritis, stress and other diseases.

Ward 81 councillor Ashley Potts, who also attended the event, applauded them for using the community facilities like the Westridge civic hall. “It gives me great joy to see that they are using the community facilities. These facilities are here for them. What I also like about them is that they have raised the bar. It will pay dividends and prolong their lives. But they also make things happen for others. There are people that will look at them and join,” he said.

Past members were also remembered and candles were lit. The club has lost three members within a year.
