Surrey Primary School has significantly improved mathematics and language results in Grade 3 and Grade 6 in the annual systemic tests

The Western Cape MEC of Education David Maynier, engaged with principal Nawaal Williams to hear more about how they have achieved this.

Building a strong foundation of literacy and numeracy in primary school grades is essential to improving academic results in high schools. Schools are employing various strategies to achieve this, and we need to determine what works, what doesn’t work, and how the Western Cape Education Department (WCED) can better support schools to improve, he said.

Mr Maynier said: “It is clear that principal Williams is leading an innovative and caring team, ensuring that learners who require extra support receive this. I look forward to visiting the school again soon to have an in-depth discussion with teachers for their perspective on how we can improve learning outcomes across the Western Cape.
