A former Rocklands resident has won the prestigious 2024 Diners Club Winemaker of the Year award.
Kiara Scott-Farmer, originally from Rocklands, discovered winemaking at high school.
“At that stage, I could never have imagined that one day I would be named Winemaker of the Year. My journey has been filled with challenges, but it also highlights how far the industry has come in terms of inclusivity and diversity,” she said.
Ms Scott-Farmer initially struggled to choose between music and winemaking but ultimately pursued the latter.
“Winemaking gave me a platform to honour my heritage and creativity. I’m incredibly fortunate to have made this choice.”
Winning the award is a significant milestone.
“It’s rewarding to know my achievements can inspire youth to see their potential. I take pride in the legacy of Ronel Wiid, who won this title in 1999.”
Balancing career and family life is challenging, but she credits her family’s support.
“I am deeply committed to my work, but I also prioritise time with my family.”
Coming from a community where winemaking was not a common career, she faced challenges but remained determined.
“Overcoming barriers meant staying focused and proving that anyone, regardless of background, can succeed in this industry.”
She hopes to continue innovating and contributing to the global recognition of South African wines.
“I’m excited to work with the next generation of winemakers to help them realise their potential.”
And not only has she won the award, but Kiara was also appointed Hazendal Wine Estate’s head winemaker on December 1, 2024 — a role that places her at the forefront of shaping the estate’s winemaking future.
