Family fun on AZ Berman Drive

Staff Reporter|Published

Family street dining and trading comes to Mitchell’s Plain.

Mitchell’s Plain pedestrians will be able to walk the length and breadth of AZ Berman Drive, between Kerrem and Trampoline or Charlie Streets, Beacon Valley, from noon until 8pm tomorrow, Thursday June 16, which is Youth Day.

More than 50 vendors have been approved, including local cuisine, arts and crafts, and clothing by the City of Cape Town.

The event forms part of Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis’s central business district revitalisation project to involve residents in a day filled with family fun.

“Many restaurants, vendors and traders are still struggling to recover from the impact of the pandemic and the City is committed to doing what it can to ensure they get through this. At the same time we are giving our residents, who have been stellar during lockdown periods when going out was prohibited, an opportunity to support local business and enjoy what’s on offer within their communities. We invite residents to come out and support this,” he said.

The municipality has been engaging the local sub-council and social media platforms, and sent notices to local residents and businesses.

Objectives include providing businesses and vendors with the opportunity to maximise their income, improving the urban environment and encouraging more pedestrian thoroughfare in support of businesses and avoiding significant impact on traffic flow.

The event, including local entertainment and kiddies play area, is free of charge.
