Advance Edukos Foundation held their 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children Campaign through dialogue, poster making and a demonstration against gender-based violence.
On Thursday November 28 at Rocklands Library, young people spoke about the issues of gender-based violence within the community, breaking the silence around a sensitive and often taboo subject, said director, Wendy Abrahams.
“Young people, especially those who may not have had access to information about gender-based violence, were able to ask questions, share their experiences, and engage in discussions about the importance of combating violence in all forms,” she said.
This session was important to “amplify their voices with these issues, build confidence and leadership skills and change attitudes, promoting gender equality. It provided an opportunity to challenge harmful attitudes and beliefs that may perpetuate violence or discrimination too,” she said.
The demonstration took place in Spine Road and at the UDF monument outside Rocklands Library. “This sense of empowerment through involvement helped them to see themselves as part of a larger movement for change,” she said.
16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children Campaign is a United Nations (UN) campaign that takes place annually from November 25 (International Day of No Violence against Women) to December 10 (International Human Rights Day).
