A former Tafelsig resident wrote her first fantasy novel called She Who Dreams.
Author and freelance writer, Yumnah Jones, 41, said she felt inspired to write the novella to encourage readers to live a purposeful life, rooted in self-alignment and self-awareness. In the story, she show readers through the characters the protagonist meets in the spiritual realm, to channel their talents and abilities to the benefit of humanity.
“In the novella, nature is symbolic of alignment to their purpose by their mere existence. People should feel inspired to live in alignment and to understand that their existence in the greater fabric of society matters,” she said.
The book cover features “a symbol of a woman which the reader is to explore”, she said.
Ms Jones said she had previously dabbled in poetry, which branched into opinion pieces for a small foreign news outlet, focusing on societal issues and social upliftment projects, she said.
She recently established a non-profit company, The Journeys Of Her Foundation that emanated from the Journeys Of Her storytelling project, that is dedicated to the educational empowerment of children across the African continent. She intends to publish children’s books, novellas and hopefully branch into novels eventually.
The former Cascade Primary School pupil says she has always been passionate about writing.
“I never intended to be a storyteller but always gravitated towards writing as my passion. It is only now, in my later years, that I am branching into storytelling,” she said.
Freelance editor and English teacher, Dr Carol Edson holds her PhD in Philosophy, read and edited Ms Jones’ book. She said She Who Dreams will appeal to both children and adults who appreciate fantasy.
“There are so many life lessons. I absolutely love the intrigue and the characters,” she said.
Shereen Ally, her long time neighbour, said she’s proud of Ms Jones who persevered despite challenges.
“She’s a talented writer with a unique voice and perspective. She’s a skilled storyteller with a gift for crafting and plots. I do wish her all the best, and that her book would be a resounding success.”
Ms Jones said: “Passion doesn’t always pay the bills but never neglect your passions because your passion is tied in with your purpose. Where there are no opportunities, create your own opportunities to channel your God-given gifts and abilities because we have not been put on Earth, simply to pay bills. We’re also here to be of benefit to humanity by serving and inspiring others.”
