A primary school teacher was shot dead in the school grounds yesterday morning.
The grade 6 mathematics teacher was shot in his car in Heinz Park Primary School’s parking lot, 15 minutes before school started.
SAPS spokesperson, Colonel Andre’ Traut, said two people fled the scene after the shooting and no arrests have been made.
Western Cape Education Department spokeswoman, Bronagh Hammond, said the 52-year-old teacher had been at the school since 2008.
“The WCED sends its condolences to the family, friends and school community. Counselling support has been arranged for pupils and teachers,” she said. “The incident is most distressing.”
Education MEC Debbie Schäfer called the loss of the “long-serving” teacher a “senseless tragedy“.
“It is vital that SAPS do everything in their power to find and arrest the perpetrators as soon as possible. It is unacceptable that our teachers, who are providing one of the most vital services for our country, cannot be safe at work,” said Ms Schäfer.
