Members of K9’z Kollective want to tell real stories through their music.
The nine members - Luke “SirBuys” Buys, Tristan “T-Stone” Mostert, Luchian “Lyric” Watson, Carlisle “Agent 47” Philander, Daniel “Real Dreamer” Dickson, Charlene “Luna” Daniels, Tyler “T-Rex” Bouwers, Chad “Charra” Saayman and Conray “CCG” Green - have also released a song called Plainsmen which speaks about what it’s like growing up in Mitchell's Plain.
The song, said Luke, draws on “personal and collective experiences from a young person's perspective, the good and the bad of growing up in this community, commenting on violence and the lack of unity within the community”.
And yes, it was inspired by the Plainsman community newspaper.
When one listens to it, every verse should feel like paging through the newspaper and reading different happenings and events within Mitchell's Plain,“ he said.
“It’s also a tribute to a friend Dylan ‘Dizzy Deedz’ Bryant who lost his life early in the year. He was stabbed to death after trying to stop a fight. This revealed the division within the community.”
The K9’z Kollective members said their focus is on youth and community upliftment, empowering and nurturing the young minds who will be the future.
“We believe that the power of music can change lives for the better, motivate and encourage listeners to be the best they can be if they have a goal to work towards it and make it happen,” said Tristan.
“We believe in achieving our dreams as far as possible. It doesn’t matter what harsh realities you face, you can make it.”
Charlene added: “Sadly most communities are plagued by drugs and crime. We believe there is power in unity and that’s one of our main messages in our music.”
Their music fits comfortably into the hip hop, RnB, neo-soul and amapiano genres and can be listened to on SoundCloud and Youtube.
