Oval North High School was crowned the winner in the high school category of the Mitchell’s Plain Schools Choir Competition.
Eleven Mitchell’s Plain schools competed in the inaugural competition, held by the Mitchell’s Plain Music Academy on Saturday October 26.
Yellowwood Primary, in Eastridge, came first in the primary school category with Wavercrest Primary, in Rocklands, in second place, and Hyacinth Primary, in Lentegeur, in third place.
The Spine Rock choir, which comprised Spine Road and Rocklands high school pupils, was first runner-up in the high school category, followed by Beacon Hill High.
The first-place winners walked away with R10 000 for their schools, second-prize winners received R5 000 and third-place winners R3 000.
Trevino Isaacs, founder and managing director of the Mitchell’s Plain Music Academy, described the event as a vibrant showcase of young talent and community spirit.
“The competition highlights the transformative power of music in fostering social cohesion, self-expression, and pride among students from diverse backgrounds,” he said.
The academy would soon launch a big band initiative in Mitchell’s Plain and Kraaifontein to give the youth opportunities to learn and perform music in a professional ensemble setting, he said.
“We are also in the process of formalising a new music technology course, among other programmes, to ensure that students from disadvantaged backgrounds can access cutting-edge resources and education.”
Last month, the academy received financial aid and musical instruments from the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture.
