A Mitchell’s Plain theatre production team is using drama to showcase its community’s challenges but also to emphasise that there is help.
New Identity Drama Group wants to provide a fresh perspective to empower youth with skills to be employed in the theatre industry.
They will be presenting Trane van ’n Moeder at Spine Road High School hall on Saturday October 8, at 8pm. The plot revolves three different parent and child relationships interrelated with substance abuse.
International entertainer Zakariyah Toerien, 31, who is directing part of their first dramedy, said co-script writers Umir Morris, 33, and Ashley Kamfer, 34, all from Tafelsig, have honed their talents as performers to bring to life characters and a plot with which the audience can relate.
The trio had been members of Kinders van die Ses, a production crew founded by former Lentegeur resident Omar Adams, father of renowned entertainers Loukmaan Adams and Emo Adams.
Mr Toerien said he would be forever grateful for the opportunity Mr Adams senior had given him to gain a foothold in the industry.
Mr Morris, who works for Bridgetown Theatre Company, said he had wanted to take the next step with performers.
‘’It gave me a bit of insight into how the industry works and that I want the production to have a meaning. I wanted to do something unique,’’ he said.
He said there was dire need in the community for audiences to see themselves and begin the process of attempting to change.
Mr Kamfer said they want to show youth that they can use drama and music to put food on their tables.
“The industry is tough but you have to try. You must never give up. You must believe in yourself. Stay true to yourself and stay current,’’ he said.
New to acting is Lauren Ohlson, 23, from New Woodlands, who said she was stepping outside of her comfort zone.
Naa’ilah Abrahams, 16, from Tafelsig, plays the role of a rich youngster who does no wrong. While she has performed with Kinders van die Ses, she said, this is her first serious acting stint.
They would like to take the show to schools and perform for organisations to support and build their drama group’s costumes, set and experience.
Tickets for this weekend’s show costs R100 for adults, R50 for pensioners and children, aged between four and 12.
