Only 15 percent of the unemployed youth who applied for the Wolfgat sub-council’s driver’s training licence programme were successful.
The sub-council office received 639 applications and only 98 were accepted into the programme, which started on March 26.
Last week youth staged a sit in at the Lentegeur office demanding answers.
They were told that the City of Cape Town received 70 applications from Ward 35, in Philippi; 155 from Ward 76, in Lentegeur; 104 from Ward 82, in Tafelsig West; 128 from Ward 92, in Tafelsig East; and 182 from Ward 116, in Beacon Valley and Eastridge.
Theresa Uys, mayoral committee member for corporate services, said that additional applicants could only be considered when the current beneficiaries default or additional funding becomes available.
She said provision was made for 98 learners to receive the driver’s training licence programme opportunity.
“This programme forms part of the City’s ongoing efforts to support the unemployed youth in Cape Town,” said Ms Uys.
The programme includes driver’s licence training that is 20-hours for each applicant, and provides two opportunities to pass their licence.
Ms Uys said that the wards and the sub-council had allocated a budget for this programme.
“Projects are proposed as per local needs within communities and at times, implementation of these projects are prioritised according to the urgency thereof.
“Planning around projects happen a year in advance to ensure that Council’s budgetary timelines are met,” she said.
Ms Uys said that there is no certainty about which projects would be required when the project planning occurs.
