Groote Schuur Hospital delivered stationery packs to Sonwabo Primary School in Gugulethu, Downeville Primary School in Manenberg and Cascade Primary School in Tafelsig on the first day of school on Wednesday January 17.
The hospital raised the money for the stationery from its annual charity bake-off in November.
Each of the three schools received more than 70 stationery packs with exercise books, a pair of scissors, pencil crayons, glue, a sharpener, a flip-file, a pencil and paints.
Sonwabo Primary School staff member Nosisa Hintsa said the school was surrounded by shanty towns and most parents were unemployed.
“The stationery drive from Groote Schuur Hospital helped most pupils not only themselves but also parents that cannot afford the stationery this year,” she said.
Hospital spokesperson Alaric Jacobs said: “To see the smiles on the faces of the children makes this all worthwhile, and that is why staff believe in this project.”
