A Tafelsig family who lost their home in a fire earlier this year are appealing to the public for help with completing construction of their new house before Christmas.
Clinton and Lenita Hendricks had no house insurance when a fire, started by an electrical fault, destroyed their home in April. A neighbour took the couple in along with their three children, aged 22, 14 and 11, their two-year-old grandchild; and Mr Hendricks’s 64-year-old mother.
“We have received a lot of support from the community and the public who donated clothing, shoes and groceries. Our ward councillor, Norman Adonis, donated 200 blocks, cement and sand,” she said.
According to Ms Hendricks, her family need to find a new place to stay by early December.
She said she and her husband had managed to build the interior and exterior walls of the house, but were unable to pay for the materials and carpentry needed to complete the rest of the house.
“It has been very challenging because my husband has mostly been the only one working. My daughter only started working recently, and I have been looking for work since I was retrenched in 2021.
“We are in dire need of help with roof materials and the woodwork, which are the most expensive part of completing of our home.
“We are reaching out to all for assistance to help us complete our home. Our hope is to be in our house before Christmas,” she said.
