Mitchell’s Plain singer Aziza Richards will perform in a solo fund-raising concert for the Salt River Heritage Society.
Ms Richards, 24, is part of a musical family. Her grandfather, Fuad, was a member of the Cape Malay Choir Board while her mother, Fazeelah, was a back-up singer for Elsies New Addition, a Cape minstrels group.
“I caught the singing bug when I was 5 when I went touring with my grandfather and mother,” she said.
She has performed with the Juvie Boys, a Cape minstrels group from Mitchell’s Plain, and, in February, she shared the spotlight with Nur Abrahams, Jarrad Ricketts and Loukmaan Adams for a concert in the Worcester Botanical Gardens.
Ms Richards said she was looking forward to performing in aid of the Salt River Heritage Society.
“They are doing amazing work in the community and they are working hard to keep the living heritage alive.”
Lutfi Omar, the society’s chairman, said proceeds from the event would support efforts to preserve Salt River’s history and culture.
The concert will be held at the Academia Theatre, 409 Imam Haron Road, Lansdowne, on Saturday December 21, from 8pm. Tickets cost R150 and can be bought through Quicket. For more information, contact the society’s Najma Mohamed at 084 524 4441.
