Sixteen pupils from the University of Minnesota painted a mural at Ethel’s Place Youth Care Centre in Eastridge and ran a community programme at Mini Footsteps Kindergarten in Tafelsig, on Monday June 5.
The students also took part in a leadership course.
Each year a group of students visit South Africa to work alongside local organisations to learn about the culture and identify the various leadership styles through a local leader.
Ashley Potts, director of the Cape Town Drug Centre said, apart from working with the organisations, the students also lived with host families to further advance their understanding of life in South Africa.
“The experience, though short, has been a deep learning encounter for each of the students. During their stay in Mitchell’s Plain, they helped through assisting local educare teachers with some learning areas for the kids.
“Others spent time engaging the local community while painting a mural on the outside wall
of the centre in Eastridge lead by local artist from Grace 2 Learn Academy,” he said.
The team left for home on Saturday June 10.
