Micha Renge was relieved when she learned her ex-boyfriend, who allegedly brutally attacked her, will remain behind bars until the outcome of his bail application next week.
Ms Renge attended the bail hearing at Mitchell's Plain Magistrate's Court on Monday, February 9, where arguments in the case against her ex-boyfriend, Abu Bakhar Ceaser, continued.
At an earlier appearance on Monday, February 2, Ms Renge said outside court that she wanted bail denied for her ex-boyfriend (“Survivor of brutal assault urges court to deny bail for ex-boyfriend,” Plainsman, February 2).
It is alleged that Mr Ceaser assaulted Ms Renge for five hours at the Mnandi Beach Canal (“I thought I would die – Westridge mum survives five-hour brutal attack,” Plainsman, January 6).
Ms Renge said the "court looked at the facts. He thought nothing of coming back for me a second time while he was brutally attacking me. What makes them think that if he is out on bail, he might not do it again? That is why I am so fearful for my life,” she said.
Outside court on Monday, February 9, Linda Jones, court watch coordinator for Mitchell’s Plain United Residents Forum (MURA), said: “We are happy that he will stay behind bars. We believe this is a very serious matter. The prosecutor made it clear, and we trust and believe God will see her through."
“This is not simply a relationship dispute that escalated,” said Kaylynn Palm, Head of Action Society’s Action Centre in the Western Cape, who attended the court proceedings.
“This is an alleged attempted murder marked by extreme violence and a clear disregard for the life of a young woman. We will stand with Micha to ensure that her safety is prioritised and that the justice system treats this matter with the seriousness it deserves,” she said.
The case was postponed till Friday, February 27.
