Excavation work in the Swartklip sewer line area of Mitchell's Plain has uncovered large quantities of building rubble inside the system.
The obstruction caused repeated blockages, leading to persistent sewer overflows in multiple locations over the past several weeks.
Sub-council 12 chairperson and Ward 116 councillor Solomon Philander said the illegal dumping of rubble and foreign objects directly threatens municipal infrastructure, public health, and the environment. He urged residents and contractors to prevent further damage by disposing of construction waste responsibly.
Designated free waste disposal sites are available at Strandfontein, Spine Road, and Swartklip Road. Residents are reminded that proper disposal is essential to protecting sewer systems and ensuring weekly wheelie bin collections continue without disruption.
He stressed that maintaining infrastructure is a shared responsibility. Community cooperation is crucial to safeguard public health, reduce environmental risks, and maintain service delivery standards in Mitchell's Plain.
