A piece of South African school football history now hangs in the foyer of Lentegeur High School after former pupil Nazeem Dawood returned to the school this week to donate a commemorative tracksuit from a 1994 Western Province Schools Soccer Union (WPSSSU) tour to England.

Mr Dawood, a former pupil of Lentegeur High School, shared the story of a life-changing football opportunity he had received all those years ago -  he was one of 30 boys selected from 600 trialists for the tour.

During his visit on Monday, January 19, he stood with the principal, Natasha Heugh, in front of a framed display containing the tracksuit and team photos.

The team played youth sides from Liverpool, Manchester City, and Arsenal, as well as local districts, universities, and high schools.

Mr Dawood said he had the honour of captaining the team against Manchester City, an experience that left a lasting impression on him.

Ms Heugh said it was a proud moment to witness the gesture. "His story inspired and motivated our pupils. Anything is possible with hard work and determination. It also reignited the pride we have for our school on top of our improved Grade 12 results."

Last year, the 1994 team reunited to create a 30th anniversary tracksuit.

Mr Dawood purchased an extra one to give to Lentegeur High School as a way of thanking the school for supporting his dream.

“I want every pupil to see this and know that no dream is too big,” he said, describing the gesture as a way of giving back to the school and the community, especially as he came from a difficult home.

Mr Dawood said the display is meant to inspire pupils, showing that with dedication and support, dreams can be realised.
