Pupils’ faces lit up as they saw themselves after receiving haircuts, stationery, and support when the South African National Zakah Fund (SANZAF) spread cheer across the Western Cape in the first week of the 2026 school year.

They moved from area to area, gifting a total of 2 500 pupils, in Manenberg, Khayelitsha, Mitchell's Plain, Bridgetown, Salt River, Retreat, Paarl, Wellington, Worcester, Stellenbosch, Atlantis, Vredenberg, Malmesbury, and Vredendal from Monday, January 12 until Friday, January 16.

SANZAF Western Cape, regional manager Shafiek Barendse, said the initiative was to equip pupils with the necessary tools to excel in their studies and build a brighter future.

Dozens of pupils were treated to a back-to-school haircuts and manicures at South African National Zakah Fund (SANZAF) welfare offices across the province.

Their social welfare offices and partner community organisation locations were hives of activity with complimentary school-ready haircuts and manicures, courtesy of generous local sponsors.

Mr Barendse stated that this added touch would enhance the pupils' confidence and self-esteem.

"We believe that every child deserves a chance to succeed."

"We're grateful to our donors and SANZAF supporters who have made this initiative possible. Together, we can make a tangible difference in the lives of these young learners," he said.

The stationery packs included pens, pencils, notebooks, and calculators

Mr Barendse said SANZAF's efforts were focused on supporting vulnerable communities and that the initiative was a testament to the power of community-driven change.

"The SANZAF Back to School is a prime example of how collective efforts can positively impact the lives of those in need," he said.
