What began as a dream by the Young Adult Youth Ministry (YAYMI) to develop the youth of Mitchell’s Plain into strong community leaders is rapidly becoming a reality.
Guided by four pillars, social, skills, spiritual, and media development, YAYMI continues to empower young people to grow with purpose and confidence.
The organisation has built strong connections with youth from Portland and the surrounding areas. More than just a voice for young people, YAYMI is steadily building a recognisable brand and a formidable sports programme that instils discipline, teamwork, and pride.
Wayne Steyn Chatting said the group has made its leaders proud after achieving outstanding results in Badminton South Africa, previously known as the Western Province Badminton League.
YAYMI fielded four teams - Under-13, Under-15, Under-17, and Under-19 - all of which performed exceptionally well. Adding to this milestone, the teams have been invited to represent Mitchell’s Plain in Namibia from January 5 to 10, next year.
“Badminton was introduced to us in 2021, just after Covid, by our own Mitchell’s Plain badminton professional, Hayzette Sassman,” said Mr Chatting.
“Local children showed immediate interest and developed quickly, progressing to compete in national tournaments.”
Since then, YAYMI Badminton SA has proudly represented the community at numerous national events, travelling to Tshwane in Gauteng, Mthatha, Mangaung, and Gqeberha. In recognition of this growth and success, the YAYMI Badminton SA Club was officially registered at the beginning of 2025.
Chatting described 2025 as an overwhelming year of achievement, with the club winning three league trophies in the Cape Town Badminton League - the 3A League, 2D League, and 2B League.
He added that the upcoming friendly tournament with the Namibian team is not only about competition but also about fostering unity.
“These matches are helping to build friendships and break down cultural barriers,” he said.
