Yellowwood Primary School in Tafelsig received a R20 000 donation from the mayor’s office to support its award-winning choir.

The cheque was handed over at the school on Monday, December 8, boosting the choir’s efforts to compete and perform at various regional events.

Chesray Sauls, a teacher and choir master at the school, said on behalf of the choir that they were deeply grateful for the contribution.

“The pupils were overwhelmed and thoroughly enjoyed their recent choir tour to Bredasdorp. Following a successful year, which included wins at the Cape Coons, the Mitchell's Plain Music Academy’s Choir Competition, and the Artscape Youth Festival,” he said.

Mr Sauls explained that the choir travelled to Bredarsdorp, where they performed concerts, conducted outreach programmes at old age homes, and participated in a variety of shows. “It was a full adventure, and the pupils represented Yellowwood Primary with pride. We thank the City for this contribution,” he said.

Marvin Sampson, community liaison for the mayor’s office, said the office had decided to assist the school because of its exceptional choir, considered one of the best in Mitchell’s Plain.

“I learned that Yellowwood Primary is a no-fee paying school, yet the work they are doing is remarkable and heartwarming. We congratulate the pupils and staff and wish them well in future competitions. Some of the choir members also perform with other groups, which shows their talent and dedication,” he said.

Donovan Senosi, principal of Yellowwood Primary School, said the funding allowed the pupils to attend a museum and choir tour outside their area for the first time.

“It was a fantastic experience, and we are grateful to the City for contributing to our pupils’ educational experience. The support helps broaden their horizons,” he said.

Pupil and choir member Shakeenah Swart thanked the Mayor for the donation. “We had a wonderful time on the tour and saw many new things. The experience was amazing,” she said.

Ward 82 councillor Washiela Harris said she was honoured to hand over the cheque and praised the choir for its dedication and talent.

“The pupils continue to grow from strength to strength. Supporting our youth is essential, and it was a privilege to assist in securing this funding, allowing the pupils to compete and meet other choir members in the region,” she said.
