West End Primary School recognised community members, stakeholders, and donors for their commitment and contributions to the school during its West End Appreciation Awards on Friday, November 21.
The event celebrated individuals who have gone above and beyond to support the school’s growth and upliftment.
Principal Clive Arries said it was important to honour these individuals and give them their flowers while they are still alive.
He said the awards provide a public platform to express gratitude and ensure that the contributions of partners, volunteers, and supporters are truly valued. This includes the sharing of time, resources, expertise, and dedication.
Mr Arries said building a strong school is essential to building a strong society, adding that this belief guides West End’s focus on holistic development, framed around four pillars known as Harvesting AgriA5.
“We are driven by a vision that goes beyond mere academic excellence. “Our goal is to prepare our learners for the future, ensuring they graduate as complete adults who are ready to take our community forward and contribute positively to society.”
Mr Arries added that the school’s partners help transform simple, one-off acts of support into lasting relationships that enrich the pupils’ educational experience and advance shared community goals. “Their commitment encourages continued support and inspires others to get involved, ensuring the sustainability of our programmes. They serve as exemplary models of service, showcasing the positive impact that strong school-community collaboration can have—especially here in Mitchell’s Plain.”
The award recipients welcomed the gesture. Faldiela Chotia said that West End had done exceptionally well in integrating the community into its daily life. She commended the principal for steering the school so effectively.
“The learners’ behaviour and the cleanliness of the school say everything. His leadership and how he has transformed the school are amazing. The school is in the right hands,” she said.
Another award recipient, Deen Louw of the Deen Louw Foundation, expressed his gratitude to the principal and staff. He said working with West End was always encouraging because of its professionalism and strong work ethic.
He added that through their partnership, they had been able to empower young people in Mitchell’s Plain.“West End is playing a significant role in transforming Mitchell’s Plain and its surrounding communities."
Mr Arries said celebrating its community champions is especially meaningful as Mitchell’s Plain prepares to mark its 50th anniversary next year.
