Lentegeur police have opened cases of culpable homicide and reckless and negligent driving following a multi-vehicle accident in Woodlands that claimed the life of a 30-year-old man.
Traffic Services spokesperson Kevin Jacobs confirmed the crash was reported at 3:36 pm on Wednesday, November 19, at Eisleben Road and Eros Way, Woodlands, Mitchell’s Plain.
Five vehicles were involved, resulting in 11 injuries.
Ten people sustained minor injuries, while one person was seriously injured and transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. The pedestrian, 30, was declared deceased at the scene by Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Mr Jacobs said.
Provincial police spokesperson Sergeant Wesley Twigg said the driver of a BMW was travelling on the wrong side of the road when he collided with the pedestrian.
The BMW then crashed into four other vehicles, injuring the drivers and their passengers, including children. The injured, including the BMW driver, were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation, and no arrest has been made.
Raafiqah Ganger, chairperson of the Sector 4 sub-forum, which covers Woodlands, Harmony Village, and Morgan Village, extended condolences to the family of the deceased.
“The young gentleman was knocked over so brutally, and it was overwhelming to see the speed and the impact that caused the collision with all the other cars at the scene. We are keeping the family in our thoughts, and to all those who were injured. This has been such a tragic incident. We are hoping that justice will be brought forward,” said Ms Ganger.
“We would like to extend our sincere condolences to the young man’s family, to his mother, and to the broader community of Lentegeur West,” she said.
Michael Jacobs, chairperson of Lentegeur CPF, called on police to expedite the investigation. “As the Lentegeur CPF, we call on the police to speed up the investigation into this terrible tragedy."
"If there is any proof of negligence or reckless driving, the person responsible must be held accountable and brought before the court to face the consequences of their actions. We express our sincere condolences to the family of the deceased and to all those affected by this terrible tragedy,” he said.
