Parkhurst Primary School in Westridge celebrated its victory on Friday, November 7, when pupils, teachers, and parents gathered in the school hall to honour the winning team of the Reading and Writing Solutions (RWS) newspaper Quiz and Spelling Bee, held in partnership with Athlone News at the Dulcie September Civic Centre in September.
The pupils received R500, while the school walked away with a R20 000 prize sponsored by Wholesun Bread. The team also received gifts from Gift of the Givers, Waltons Stationery, Literature for Africa, and Cape Flats Audio Visual.
Teacher Chanwine Schoeman praised her pupils for putting Parkhurst on the map.
“This win didn’t come by chance; it’s the result of hard work, determination, and teamwork,” she said.
Principal Stephan Visser said the school’s success reflects the dedication of both teachers and pupils.
“Without reading, we cannot comprehend. Education is what we need, and our pupils have dreams. That’s why they are here,” he said.
Mr Visser, who is known for nurturing both academic and sporting talent at the school, said that this achievement will be remembered for years to come.
“Today is a celebration of excellence, a moment for our pupils to shine,” he said.
Team leader Etana Mboniswa thanked her teachers and teammates for their support.
“Without teamwork, this victory would not have been possible,” she said.
RWS founder Jeff Paulse said: “We are here to celebrate good work, excellence, and teamwork. Out of 20 schools, Parkhurst came out on top - a true example of dedication and diligence,” he said.
RWS team leader Melissa Ross also praised the young champions.
“You can wear your uniform proudly - you are second to none. Parkhurst is full of leaders and champions,” she said.
Parent and Wholesun representative Glen Johnson described Parkhurst as a “fantastic school.”
“I refused to send my children anywhere else,” Mr Johnson said.
“There’s no school in Mitchell’s Plain or even Cape Town that matches Parkhurst academically. The teachers are truly dedicated to seeing children succeed.”
