Oval North High pupils have been recognised with the Mayor’s Civic Pride Award, which celebrates individuals and groups demonstrating civic pride and contributing to making Cape Town a better place for all residents.

The Geometric Mind Society (GMS), formed by pupils at Oval North, is the recipient of the Mayor’s Civic Pride Award. They received their winnings at school on Tuesday, October 28.

The group focuses on Mathematics and Science while inspiring students to pursue academic excellence and contribute to their community. Under the guidance of chairperson Daniel Alfreds and his team, the pupils have elevated the school’s profile through competitions and outreach initiatives.

Sub-council 12 chairperson Solomon Philander said the award highlights pupils’ dedication despite negative publicity surrounding youth in communities.

“We have pupils at Oval North who want to excel and give back to the community. The GMS group has done brilliant work, not only at the school but also outside of it,” he said.

Daniel said it was a privilege to be recognised by the mayor. “As a leadership team, we are very grateful for this award. Our focus on Maths and Science drives us to work harder and represent our school with pride,” he said.

Secretary Michaela van Diemen said that the club brings together pupils who share a passion for Maths and Science. “We’ve represented our school at maths competitions and young scientist events, and we are honoured to receive this award from the mayor.”

Through partnerships with MANCOSA and Victoria Hospital, GMS pupils develop skills in coding, robotics, and healthcare, gaining real-world exposure and inspiring future careers.

They also excel in competitions such as the South African Mathematics Olympiad and the Eskom Science Expo, while leading environmental initiatives, including waste reduction and sustainable school improvements.

Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis said: “Since becoming mayor, I have encouraged residents, businesses, and organisations to take pride in Cape Town. Civic Pride goes beyond cleaning—it’s about improving our city. Those who demonstrate it deserve recognition. This is the third year of the award program.”

Principal Theresa Jacobs said she was proud of the club’s achievements. “I am so excited for our GMS club and proud of all their efforts. This recognition is well deserved,” she said.
