Five Lions Clubs from across Cape Town — including Cape Town, Cape of Good Hope, Sea Point, Athlone, Mitchells Plain, and Groote Schuur — joined forces on Saturday, October 25, to host a “Pretty in Pink” breast cancer high tea fundraiser.

Gail Darling, a member of the Cape Town Lions Club, said a breast cancer survivor shared her personal journey, as did councillor Carmen Siebritz, who delivered words of encouragement.

Representatives from the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA) were also present, offering free breast examinations to attendees, she said.

The fundraiser raised a total of R19,000, which will be used to purchase Knitted Knockers — soft, handmade breast prostheses for women who have undergone mastectomies.

“These knitted prostheses are given freely to recipients as a gesture of care and support,” she said

The Lions Clubs are now appealing to senior groups and knitting enthusiasts to get involved by helping create the Knitted Knockers.

Once completed, they will be donated to the oncology wards at Groote Schuur and Tygerberg hospitals, providing comfort and hope to women in recovery.
