First Step Dance School from Westridge earned Double Gold at the “Show Your Talent” competition held at Curro Satari, Somerset West, qualifying the group to represent South Africa at Talent America in New York in 2027.

The community-based studio was founded in 2023 by dance teacher Deneca Mac Master, who aimed to provide affordable, professional dance training in her neighbourhood.

The school currently trains more than 60 pupils aged 2 to 13 in Ballet, Hip-Hop and Modern Dance.

Co-founder Kayla Megan Biggs said the Double Gold recognition reflects the studio’s consistent standard of excellence. “Our pupils worked hard throughout the year, and this result shows that their discipline and training are paying off,” she said.

The school will begin a fundraising campaign to cover travel and participation costs for the international competition, she said.

“Representing South Africa is a major opportunity for our dancers,” said Ms Biggs. “We are calling on local businesses and residents to support our efforts to make this trip possible.”

She said the next focus is on competition preparation and maintaining training standards ahead of 2027.
