Westridge’s young talent is shining bright as Jonah du Plessis has earned a spot on Santam’s 2026 child art calendar.
The nine-year-old's artwork was selected from more than 2 700 entries nationwide, a testament to his creativity and a proud moment for his community. His achievement is also inspiring other young artists to chase their own creative dreams.
Art runs deep in Jonah’s family — he’s a fourth-generation artist. His great-grandmother, Constance Coetzee, once taught art at Westridge Library, a love for creativity later shared by his grandmother and mother, who now volunteers teaching children every Saturday morning.
Jonah, who took part in his first art competition, said his inspiration came from his dog, Hulk.

Jonah’s father’s side of the family also carries artistic talent, showing that creativity flows strongly in his family.
“My mommy told me about my achievement, and it feels good. I’m excited and nervous,” Jonah said.
“I love drawing, and this is my first art competition.”
When asked about his inspiration, he said, “My dog Hulk is my best friend.”
Jonah’s artwork was created using pencils and khokis, and he described the process as “quick and easy.”

At home, Jonah can always be found drawing.
“Ma and I used to draw all the time, but now I draw with my mommy. She also teaches other children,” he said.
On pursuing more art projects, he said, “I love drawing. Yes, I do. My mommy is a good role model.”

Jonah’s mother, Shelley du Plessis, said she was proud. “His focus, attention to detail, and enjoyment of art fill me with joy. He has so much potential, and I thank God for his blessings. My late granny would be so proud. Whenever we visited her, they would sit and draw together, laughing.”
“Believe in yourself. Have fun and enjoy it," said Jonah.
My mommy always says in art class: "Don’t say ‘I can’t.’ Say ‘Yes, I can.’”
