Seven-year-old William Jacobs, a Grade 1 pupil at Searidge Park Primary School in Tafelsig, recently brought his dream of becoming a fireman closer to reality.

For a school project assigned by his teacher, Logan Petersen, William built a miniature firehouse using recycled materials.

With help from his parents and support from school principal Gurschzon Conradie, he crafted the firehouse to represent his admiration for firefighters.

William personally delivered the firehouse to Platoon Commander Dervin Abrahams at the Westridge Fire Station in Mitchell’s Plain, located on Dagbreek Avenue. During the handover, William took a photo with Platoon Commander Abrahams, capturing a proud moment for the young boy.

Platoon Commander Abrahams said he was impressed by William’s professionalism and enthusiasm.

“It’s quite awesome that he chose a fire department project. He’s determined and has a heart for helping others,” he said.

Although he could not give William a full station tour due to an emergency, he invited him to visit on a Saturday.

Platoon Commander Abrahams, who has been with the City of Cape Town Fire Department for 21 years and was recently promoted to Platoon Commander, highlighted the importance of children learning about firefighters and fire safety.

“If you’re determined to assist and help others, this is the job for you,” he said.

Reflecting on the experience, William said: “I couldn’t stop smiling and felt very proud. Platoon Commander Abrahams was friendly and warm. He said I could visit the station anytime and would always see my work there.”

Platoon Commander Abrahams advised William and other young dreamers: “Study, study, study. Finish your matric, work hard, and go after what you want in life.”

With his firehouse now at the Westridge Fire Station, William hopes his story inspires other children in Mitchell’s Plain to pursue their dreams, no matter how big or small.
