Waldilene Folding, a mathematics teacher at Summerdale High School in Lentegeur, has been recognised for excellence in teaching at both district and provincial levels.

Initially nominated in the category Excellence in Teaching Mathematics (GET) at the district level, Ms Folding won in her district before advancing to the provincial stage, where all eight Western Cape districts competed.

The award highlights Ms Folding’s dedication to pupils and their success. It serves as a beacon of hope, showing that pupils from any background, including the heart of Lentegeur, can succeed and thrive. She emphasised the importance of a growth mindset and solution-focused approach, echoing her favourite saying: Bloom where you are planted.”

"I dedicate this recognition to my pupils, their guardians, the school community, and my family, acknowledging the collective effort that contributes to student achievement,” said Ms Folding.

Ms Folding began her career at Aloe Junior, under the leadership of principals Brian Arendse and, later Fay Daniels, during whose tenure the school transitioned into a high school, now known as Summerdale High School. Following Ms Daniels’ retirement, Rakim Rooi took over as principal. Ms Folding has been part of the school community since 2016, consistently embodying the school motto: “Nothing without labour.”
