Awqaf SA, in partnership with Portland High School and the Western Cape Education Department, will be hosting a Grade 11 mathematics workshop at West End Primary School in preparation for the upcoming September examinations.

This initiative forms part of a broader series of mathematics workshops aimed at supporting schools on the Cape Flats.

It follows the success of a recent Grade 12 workshop at Spine Road High School, which drew more than 700 pupils from across Mitchell’s Plain. The programme has steadily grown in popularity and reach, becoming a vital intervention for pupils needing additional support in mathematics, said Awqaf SA’s Hasanain Abdullah (Free maths workshops to support pupils in Mitchell’s Plain and the Cape Flats” Plainsman August 11).

Mr Abdullah said mathematics is critical for careers in programming, commerce, engineering, and science, making it a key subject for pupils planning their future studies and careers.

Awqaf SA is a charitable endowment organisation rooted in the prophetic system of waqf. Through projects in health, social cohesion, and infrastructure development, the organisation aims to build sustainable, self-reliant communities, he said.

For more than 10 years, the organisation has invested in these mathematics workshops, targeting Grade 10, 11, and 12 pupils taking pure mathematics during May, August, and October.

The workshops are structured as hybrid sessions, with up to 500 pupils attending in person and a further 13 000 connecting via Awqaf SA’s YouTube platform. These sessions are free to access, but online registration is essential to secure participation.

The upcoming Grade 11 workshop will take place over two days. On Saturday, August 30, pupils will focus on Paper 1, which covers algebra, while Sunday, August 31, will be dedicated to Paper 2, focusing on geometry. Both sessions will run from 8.30am until 3pm.

Pupils can register for in-person attendance here or online attendance here.
