The Homestead Mitchell’s Plain Drop-in Centre hosted its Women’s Day event, bringing together caregivers, community partners, and supporters, aiming to celebrate and empower women.

Held on Wednesday, August 13, the event was facilitated by Ashlyne Jooste, centre supervisor and prevention and early intervention social worker, Salomie Johannes-Petersen, social auxiliary worker, and Chantel Akiemdien, cook.

The event reflected The Homestead’s vision: “that no child should live, work, or beg on the streets of Cape Town, but instead grow up in a loving family and supportive community,” said Ms Jooste.

Its mission is to help vulnerable children rebuild their lives while providing prevention and early intervention services to families in disadvantaged communities.

The theme of the day, “Empowering Women to Rise Above Their Circumstances,” came to life through the words of guest speaker Martina Martin.

Thirty caregivers of Homestead beneficiaries were treated to a three-course meal, acknowledging the daily challenges they face. “We wanted them to feel valued, celebrated, and encouraged to rise above their circumstances,” Ms Jooste said.

Eight women from partner organisations were also honoured for their role in uplifting the Tafelsig community. These included YMCA South Africa, Childline South Africa, Safeline Child Abuse Treatment and Prevention Centre, and  SAPS Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit – Domestic Violence Division.

The celebration was not just about appreciation but also about recognition. By honouring caregivers, partners, and donors, The Homestead acknowledged the vital contribution these women make in strengthening families and uplifting the community, Ms Jooste said.
