Residents of all ages, from pupils to seniors, joined City of Cape Town staff and gardening experts from a local rose grower and an organic produce supplier for a hands-on workshop on pruning and caring for roses.

The session covered pruning techniques, the difference between fertilizing and feeding, correct feeding schedules, and the best times to cut blooms. Participants also explored creative uses for roses, such as rose-flavored meringues and a vitamin C syrup for children, an educational twist that delighted the crowd.

“This garden is a community treasure. By working together, we’re not just caring for the roses, but also building connections, sharing skills, and creating a space that everyone can enjoy,” said the City’s mayoral committee member for Community Services and Health, Francine Higham.

The rose pruning workshop drew young and old residents.

“Workshops like these are about more than gardening. They’re about passing knowledge between generations and giving our community the tools to take pride in our shared spaces. It was wonderful to see seniors and youth learning from one another and from the experts,” said local ward councillor Ashley Potts.

Seniors valued the chance to share their own experiences and gain expert feedback, while youth enjoyed learning skills they could use at home or in community gardens. The event formed part of a broader initiative to promote environmental stewardship, recreation and community engagement in Mitchells Plain.

Later this season, residents will be invited to a rose show to admire the gardens in full bloom.
