AWQAF SA will be hosting a series of free maths workshops this August and September to help pupils in Mitchell’s Plain, the Cape Flats, and surrounding areas prepare for their end-of-year mathematics examinations.

The organisation aimed to prioritise transport challenges that have previously limited attendance at workshops held in the southern suburbs. As a community organisation, AWQAF SA runs projects focused on social cohesion, health, and education aimed at uplifting marginalised communities.

Mickaeel Collier, CEO of AWQAF SA, emphasised the importance of mathematics, saying that it is essential for career paths in engineering, finance, computer science, and life skills. “We have realised that maths is an essential subject required for careers in engineering, finance, computer science, and further life skills. This project fills a gap where learners struggle with the subject,” Mr Collier said.

Since 2016, the maths workshops have benefited a significant number of pupils. One standout success story is Rorisang Matimba, who scored 100% in his final Grade 12 maths exam last year and is now studying actuarial science at the University of Cape Town.

The workshops are held annually in May, August, and October to prepare pupils for mid-year, mock, and final examinations. Teachers who have integrated these workshops into their teaching programmes have testified to the positive impact on their pupils’ results.

AWQAF SA offers the sessions in a hybrid format, with up to 500 pupils attending in person, while a broader online audience of up to 13,000 joins through the organisation's YouTube and TikTok platforms.

This month’s workshops are tailored for Grades 10, 11, and 12 pupils. The Grade 12 sessions, focusing on Paper 1 (Algebra) and Paper 2 (Geometry), will take place at Spine Road High School in Mitchell’s Plain on Saturday, August 16, and Sunday, August 17, starting at 8.30am. Grade 11 pupils will meet for their sessions on Saturday, August 30, and Sunday, August 31, at West End Primary School in Lentegeur, while Grade 10 workshops will be held at Luhalaza High School in Khayelitsha on Saturday, September 6, and Sunday, September 7.

All sessions are free, but online registration is essential to confirm attendance. Those attending online will receive stream links upon successful registration.
