Civil servants and frontline workers were treated to a hot drink and doughnut on Mandela Day, Friday, July 18, thanks to a joint initiative by Unchain The Plain and RLabs in Westridge.

Juven Rittles, project coordinator at Unchain The Plain, said the gesture was a token of appreciation:

“We just wanted to say thank you. These are people who enter spaces we often wouldn’t feel safe going into. They fight for us, help us, and serve the community. It’s not always easy, and we wanted to lift their spirits.”

Captain Mornay Kleinhans of Mitchell’s Plain police said: “I really appreciate it. It warms me up for my duty. It’s important that I stay engaged with both my precinct and the community.”

RLabs Café head Amiena Samaai said it was special to give back:

“I loved being part of a day where we could interact with police and other officials, put faces to the work they do, and thank them for helping keep our communities safe.”

Captain Ian Swartz, Mitchell’s Plain police's crime prevention operational commander, said: “It’s good to have initiatives like this. There’s a lot happening out there. Just being able to connect with the community makes a big difference.”
