In a community where many young people face daily struggles with violence, poverty, and limited opportunities, a local non-profit organisation is working to restore confidence and hope.
Founded eight years ago by Celita Jenecker, 26, 42 Unbreakable began as a way to showcase resilience in the face of hardship.
Today, it has grown into a registered NPO that supports youth across Mitchell’s Plain through modelling, pageantry, mentorship, and leadership development. ("Survivor of bullying turns ‘pain into power’" Plainsman June 19, 2024).
Celita, who was bullied throughout high school, says the work is deeply personal.
“I know what it’s like to feel invisible, to doubt yourself. We use these platforms to help young people find their voice and believe in their worth again,” she said.
The organisation’s modelling school, KayLita’s, runs weekly sessions at Dagbreek Hall and focuses on more than stage presence. Pupils learn public speaking, discipline, goal-setting, and teamwork, skills that often stay with them long after they leave the programme.
Over the years, 42 Unbreakable has become a space where young people are seen, heard, and supported.
Many arrive shy and withdrawn but gradually grow into confident leaders.
“We’re not just raising models,” said director of the NPO, Kayla Jenecker, “we’re raising role models.”
The organisation hopes to increase its school outreach and offer every participant a branded backpack and motivational booklet with affirmations and personal stories, a reminder that their value isn’t defined by their circumstances.
While they’ve sustained their work largely through personal sacrifice, ongoing support from local businesses has helped them stay afloat. The NPO is calling on more community members and sponsors to get involved.
“We may not be changing the whole world, but for each young person we reach, it means everything,” said Kayla.
