Hakuna Matata and Friends, a local community movement, has donated 2 500 pairs of school shoes to children living in an underprivileged informal settlement in Tafelsig.

As part of their youth month initiative, every child at the settlement camp received blankets, beanies, socks, toiletries, lunch, and other small luxuries, in addition to the shoes said chairperson of the movement Irafaan Abrahams ("NPO raises R200 000 for school shoes and feeding scheme" Plainsman May 8).

The handover marked the final stop of the Hakuna Matata 2025 school shoes project, which officially concluded on Sunday, June 8.

The initiative ran over six weekends, with distributions taking place on Saturday, May 3; Saturday, May 10; Saturday, May 17; Saturday, May 24; Saturday, May 31; and ending with the final handover, he said.

“They thought they were only getting school shoes. But the smiles, the laughter, the excited gasps - those were proof that the surprise ‘big bags’ made a lasting impact. May Allah accept our small efforts, Insha'Allah. Shukran to all our donors,” he said.

Liezel Stuurman, secretary of the Kapteinsklip informal settlement said they were very excited about the packages. She said the children's faces lit up when they received the packets and they were so grateful.

"Going into the rural communities and seeing them appreciate the little they have yet being thankful for what they've received is humbling. This has made us want to do more. We will continue to raise funds through the marathon's and cycle tours, doing as much as we can. Our team has outdone themselves," said Mr Abrahams.
