Residents can apply for indigent grants, which offers free basic water and electricity, refuse removal, rates rebates and relief for arrears. Take your identity document, proof of income, unemployment, proof of being South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) grant recipient or proof of private pension; three months bank statement; where applicable a divorce decree; death certificate of spouse; combined household income must be less than R7 500 to apply. Residents are encouraged to apply via their local ward councillor office for assistance. Mr Philander said these grants offer hope and a helping hand to those households who cannot afford basic services. During his session to help residents complete forms on Saturday May 24, application was made to write off a total of R225 179.97 worth of debt. The City of Cape Town’s Draft Budget 2025/26, tabled recently, includes a R5.2 billion allocation to assist struggling households.
