April is Autism Awareness Month. On Saturday April 26, Strive Autism Learning Centre is hosting its fifth annual fundraising autism walk at Westridge Gardens, followed by a host of fun-filled activities and a picnic for families until 2.30pm. There will also be live entertainment and food on sale.

The 5km walk/run starts at 9.30am, but registration is from 8.30am. Entry is R60 for adults, R40 for pensioners and R30 for children under 13. Free entry to children with autism spectrum disorder.

Strive Autism Learning Centre, which is located at The Farm Recreation Centre in Montrose Park, first opened its gates to children on the autism spectrum in 2020. Founded by Meghan Meyer and Tohirah Johnson, the learning centre works with children from three to 13 years old, and offers on-site speech therapy.

"We started our learning centre from scratch and face many challenges daily. Our school does not receive any funding. We are solely dependent on school fees to cover resources such as staff, rental, phone bills and our learners' day-to-day needs.

"We are hosting this event to help spread awareness on autism and to teach the community about the challenges our kids face on a daily basis. We want to offer our assistance to their families that are facing challenges as well.

"Please come out to support and help us raise funds for kids in need," said Ms Meyer.
