PAC activist Nomthandazo Bam died after being shot during a funeral service at the Maitland cemetery.
Police are investigating a murder case after an Nyanga woman was fatally shot at a Pan Africanist Congress activist’s funeral, which was attended by the party’s president and government minister Mzwanele Nyhontso.
It is believed that Ntombomzi Bam, also a PAC activist, was hit by one of the bullets fired in a gun salute by mourners at the funeral of Yolanda Mjuza at Maitland cemetery, on Saturday February 8.
Ms Bam was rushed to Vangate Hospital where she was declared dead on arrival.
“An adult female was fatally wounded. The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation, and no arrests have been made yet,” said police spokesman Sergeant Wesley Twigg.
He urged anyone with any information about the incident to come forward.
Ms Bam will be buried in Mau Mau, Nyanga, on Saturday.
Her husband, Norman Moyo, said the family would issue a statement later as they were busy with funeral arrangements.
Ms Mjuza’s funeral service had been held earlier at the St Francis Hall in Langa, where Mr Nyhontso, who is both PAC president and Minister of Land Reform and Rural Development, had delivered a eulogy.
It is understood that he was also at the burial at Maitland cemetery, where the shooting happened, but, according to sources at the funeral, he did not witness the shooting because it happened “far away from the gravesite”.
Vukani was unable to reach Mr Nyhontso for comment.
A Western Cape PAC leader, who was only prepared to identify himself as Jojo, said: “With due respect and sincerity, the matter is delicate and is sharply under the eye of SAPS so therefore it is difficult to issue a statement around this matter.”
He advised Vukani to contact PAC national head of security Ma Africa Mama, but we were unable to reach her by deadline.
